“Demo Day” The Founders | TechStars Boulder | Episode 12

August 13, 2010 | Rob La Gesse

In the 12th and final episode of TechStars Boulder 2010, sponsored by Rackspace, the teams gear up for what the last 90 days were all about: Demo Day.

With more than 250 potential investors in attendance at the Boulder Theater, the startups are gunning to ace their pitch, book as many meetings as possible, and negotiate like pros.

Paul Berberian, a TechStars mentor and former CEO of Raindance Communications, advises the teams to feel good about where they are right now. “Embrace the zero,” he says. “There’s something magical about having nothing. You get to pursue what you really feel in your gut is the right thing for the market. You don’t have any crazy obligations other than just building a great company.”

The teams have to juggle mounting advice—with one mentor often contradicting another. The startups finally make their presentations to investors, mentors, and tech folks from Boulder, a city that has become nationally recognized for its entrepreneurial culture.

After the last hurrah of Demo Day, startup life “is going to start to feel a little more lonely, and that’s normal,” says Dave Cohen, the founder and CEO of TechStars. “You actually have to go out into the world. I think these companies are going to do some pretty amazing things.”
