In the ninth episode of TechStars, sponsored by Rackspace, the startups have to face reality. Eric Ries, creator of Lean Startup, scans the room and tells the competitors that at least 90 percent of them will probably fail. As the teams hone their ideas for the final pitch, each is determined to be the exception to the rule.
But a bulletproof pitch is almost impossible: Ries argues that startups set out to create something new under conditions of extreme uncertainty. “A startup is an experiment,” Ries urges. “And it’s not just an experiment in can something be built. The question is, can we create a sustainable organization?”
