CloudMade: Helping Developers get into the Location World

June 24, 2010 | Robert Scoble

The location-based service world is white hot right now, with companies like Foursquare and Loopt making announcements nearly every week. But how can you add some of these cool new location features to your own apps?

CloudMade is using the OpenStreetMap technology to bring developers a low-cost (er, free) map to their apps and giving them the tools to hook in other location features. Here Christian Petersen, VP of Community at CloudMade, tells us what they are trying to do and how they are helping developers build a new kind of location-centric application.

I think you mean OpenStreetMap, rather than OpenMap technology.

OpenStreetMap has contributors around the world creating and collecting geographic data for use by you or even your company.

CloudMade use OpenSteetMap data with their developers tools. They also use the native OpenStreetMap developer tools.

GEOFABRIK offer consulting services around OpenStreetMap data.

ITO World Use OpenStreetMap data and tools in the public transportation industry.

Wolfram | Alpha includes OpenStreetMap location data in their results.

So adding an “OpenStreetMap” tag to this article will help the rest of the OpenStreetMap community to find it as well.
