Almost every company uses a database as the driving force behind their Web site. FathomDB administers a relational database on the cloud for customers and absorbs the responsibility of maintaining a database server.
According to Justin Santa Barbara, CEO and head geek at FathomDB; many developers do not have the time or the expertise necessary to properly backup a database while it’s running. FathomDB packages the expertise for maintenance with the delivery services.
“A lot of the things we have seen go wrong are not cost driven,” said Santa Barbara, “It is not easy to backup a database without stopping it.”
Santa Barbara does not recommend buying into the NoSQL movement, “At every level you should be thinking about avoiding lock-in, for acquisition reasons or because it is fundamentally sound to not be locked-in to a single provider,” said Santa Barbara.
The NoSQL movement is an alteration from traditional relational databases, to building databases that can handle larger scale demands, but sacrifice reliability.
Mr. Santa Barbara thinks a clear mistake any startup can make is to choose a technology because it is new and popular at the time. His recommendation is to choose technologies based on clear standards.
