Amen to this.

If you want to have us students and grad-level students to become interested in something like this, you need to convince us to GET a tablet first. We're the poor people. We don't have a tablet until complete justification can be made; that means downloading our books, putting them on an iPad / Kindle, and then going merrily on our way saving money.

Money. Saving money. Usable offline. Get the picture?

OK, so I'm 35 and went back to school two years ago to finish up two degrees. Every different publisher has their own garbage platform, then there are all the specialty publishers. THEY ALL SUCK. Make my life simple, make the things available on my Kindle. I'll have it on the web, I'll have it on my tablet (another issue....make these "platforms" cross platform please), I'll have it on my laptop, desktop, Kindle and soon my Kindle Tablet.

I've been buying textbooks on the Kindle when they are available (which hasn't been too often), and bought a tablet at the beginning of this past semester thinking I could justify the purchase with the savings of buying etexts from various publishers. I wound up having four different publisher platforms to deal with and three of the four did not let you download the content you paid for, only view page by page of download up to three pages at a time. It was so bad I returned the tablet and ordered the boat anchors I couldn't get on the Kindle.

While the concept of crowd sourcing your study guides is interesting, there's just too many morons out there for me to ever trust it.

Inkling, one major word of advice. Let your users download the content they pay for, and not require every page to load from the web and/or require an internet connection to access content I've paid for.
