Rackspace Startup Program Spotlight On myFIVEby: Blogging Reinvented

November 23, 2012 | John McKenna

myFIVEby is a social app that lets you publish your stories, ideas, insights, expertise, passions and more, without the hassle of setting up and maintaining a full-on blog. myFIVEby combines simplicity, ease of use and community with an elegant interface that lets you open multiple posts on the same screen at once. This one-page structure makes managing content easy, letting you access other people’s posts via your own space, instead of having to visit theirs. myFIVEby is a beautifully simple place to write and share ideas, start conversations and discover great content.

“We call it blogging reinvented because it’s a dedicated place to write, without the hassle of setup or design and with more people around to bounce ideas off of,” explains Harry Marshall, CEO and co-founder of myFIVEby. “That said, it’s not just for bloggers and, in fact, many of our members had never written posts online before they found myFIVEby. Now, they tell us that they love expressing their ideas and preserving their stories.”

The myFIVEby concept was born in Barcelona, in Catalonia, Spain, in 2011. There are four members on the team- two from England and two from Barcelona. The members of team myFIVEby come from different backgrounds and met at one of the many startup events that take place in Barcelona. The city provides a huge, growing international startup community, combined with its reputation as a great place to live and big technology-focused events like the Mobile World Congress to be held in 2013.

“myFIVEby was originally intended as a simple network to let people share the five most important principles they live their lives by,” continues Marshall. “We soon realized that the structure we’d planned would be ideal for a broader range of content. We focused on reinventing blogging because we had all started blogs and found them overly time consuming (with multiple settings to configure and design) and isolated (often situated on a custom domain, with few ways to interact with others). So, we dedicated ourselves to fixing this.”

“It’s been really exciting to build something from scratch knowing that people can use it in completely different ways,” adds Marshall. “We share the philosophy that it’s not what you make that’s important, but what you make possible. Simon, who’s in charge of our system, is really into music and spent two years on tour with his band. He knows myFIVEby will be a great tool for musicians to communicate with fans. Alex, who works on the front end, is really into details and even used elephant skin to create a specific texture in our logo, which I often tell people because I think it’s amazing! Working with a team who share a common objective, while dominating the part they work on, is really great.”

“myFIVEby has been in Beta since September, launching in November, and we’ve been communicating directly with an early group of users to help determine which features work best and why, and what to build upon,” concludes Marshall. “We’re learning new things every day and, most recently, have been poking, testing, and trying to break things in preparation for our official launch. 2013 will be about growth, fine tuning the product and building on features like our text editor. We also want to start to give users more control over the platform, as well as open it up to developers via our API. We pay close attention to the feedback we receive to make sure our initiatives are in line with what people really want.”

Based in Spain, team myFIVEby had several choices when it came to hosting their cloud infrastructure. They choose Rackspace in part for its global brand, world class cloud computing platform, and the startup friendly environment. “We chose Rackspace because we wanted something cost effective that offered great performance, scalability and support. Rackspace delivers on all of those and also makes a huge effort with startups, which is an incredible initiative.”
